Side project

A cell you can hold.

A human cell, about 20 µm across, blown up to more than a metre at eye level. On a Quest you walk around it, grab it and take it apart with your hands. On a desktop or phone it runs in the browser, with the same tour and the same quiz.

Open the app

Runs in the browser. For VR, open it on a Quest.

The cell in the browser: the nucleus, mitochondria and Golgi apparatus inside its membrane.

What you see

Seven layers you can switch on and off, from the membrane to the ribosomes. Point at a part and it lights up. Inside a mitochondrion you see its cristae, inside the nucleus the nucleolus.

A tour walks through nine parts. Three processes follow the work of the cell: protein synthesis, respiration, secretion. A quiz asks what stuck.

The app on a desktop: the protein synthesis process at its first step, transcription, beside the cell.

Where it runs

On a Quest 3, in VR or as passthrough AR on your table. You grab the cell to move and turn it, and pull it larger with both hands. With controllers, you point and select.

On a desktop you turn it with the mouse. On a phone it sits above a panel at the bottom, and on an iPhone you can place it in your room.
